Persuaders

Persuaders, another great PBS program explores how the cultures of marketing and advertising have come to influence not only what Americans buy, but also how they view themselves and the world around them. The 90-minute documentary draws on a range of experts and observers of the advertising/marketing world, to examine how, in the words of one on-camera commentator, "the principal of democracy yields to the practice of demography," as highly customized messages are delivered to a smaller segment of the market.

"Manufacturing Consent" and "Sur la television"

Your next assignment, a reaction paper and prepare a group presentation and short discussion on one of the following videos:

  1. "Manufacturing Consent", Canadian documentary based on the Noam Chomsky/Edward Herman book by the same name. It explores the propaganda model of the media.
  2. "On Television", video where Pierre Bourdieu, France's leading sociologist shows how, far from reflecting the tastes of the majority, television, particularly television journalism, imposes ever-lower levels of political and social discourse on us all. This video is in French. Text in English can be found here.
  3. "The Merchants of Cool", a PBS program reports on creators and marketers of popular culture for teenagers.
